Saint François de Laval (1623–1708) was a French missionary and the first bishop of Quebec, known as the “Father of the Canadian Church.” Born into a noble family in France, he chose a life of service to God and the Church, embracing humility and missionary zeal over worldly comfort.
He was sent to New France (modern-day Canada), where he faced great challenges—harsh weather, difficult travel, and the spiritual needs of settlers and Indigenous peoples. With deep faith and perseverance, he worked tirelessly to establish the Church in this new land. He founded the Séminaire de Québec, which became a center for priestly formation and education.
Saint François de Laval was known for his strong defense of human dignity. He courageously opposed the exploitation of Indigenous peoples, especially in matters related to the alcohol trade, standing firm even when it brought conflict with civil authorities.
Despite his position as bishop, he lived simply and gave generously to the poor. His life was marked by prayer, sacrifice, and a deep love for Christ and His Church.
He died on May 6, 1708, and was canonized in 2014 by Pope Francis.
Prayer:
O God, who called Saint François de Laval to shepherd Your people in a distant land, grant us the same missionary spirit and courage to defend truth and charity. Help us to serve You with humility and to care for those in need. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
