Happy Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven

(May 29, 2025)

Today, we celebrate one of the most glorious events in the life of Jesus Christ—the Ascension into Heaven, which took place 40 days after His Resurrection. It marks the moment when our risen Lord, in His glorified body, returned to the Father, completing His earthly mission and opening the gates of Heaven for all who believe in Him.

What Happened at the Ascension?

Before ascending, Jesus gathered His Apostles on the Mount of Olives. There, He gave them His final instructions:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:19–20

Then, in their presence, He was lifted up into Heaven, and a cloud took Him from their sight (Acts 1:9). As the disciples stood in awe, two angels appeared and said:

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will return in the same way you have seen Him go.”
— Acts 1:11

What Does the Ascension Mean for Us?

The Ascension is not just a farewell—it’s a promise. Jesus goes to prepare a place for us (John 14:2–3), to intercede for us at the right hand of the Father. His return to Heaven reminds us that our true home is not in this world, but with Him in eternity.

It also marks the beginning of our mission as the Church. Jesus entrusted His followers to carry His message of love, forgiveness, and salvation to the ends of the earth—empowered soon by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, as You ascended into Heaven, You did not leave us alone. Thank You for remaining with us in the Holy Eucharist and through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me live with my eyes on Heaven, and my heart ready to serve You here on earth. Amen.
