Who Was Saint Norbert?
Saint Norbert of Xanten (c. 1080 – 1134) was a German bishop and the founder of the Premonstratensian Order, also known as the Norbertines. Born into nobility, Norbert initially lived a comfortable and worldly life, but a near-death experience during a lightning storm led him to radically convert and dedicate his life to God.
He became a wandering preacher, known for his zeal, humility, and passion for reforming the clergy. In 1120, he founded a religious order committed to both community life and active ministry, blending monastic prayer with missionary work. Later, Norbert was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, where he worked tirelessly to restore order and holiness in the Church.
Despite facing resistance and hardship, Saint Norbert remained committed to truth and charity. He died in 1134 and was canonized in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII.
A Saint of Eucharistic Devotion
Saint Norbert was especially devoted to the Holy Eucharist, defending the Real Presence during times of doubt and heresy. His life reminds us of the power of conversion, the call to reform, and the grace of the Blessed Sacrament.

O God, who made the Bishop Saint Norbert a servant of your Church outstanding in his zeal for truth and holiness, grant, we pray, that, by his intercession, we may always experience the power of your grace.
