Saint of the Day: St. Barnabas

(June 11, 2025)

“Son of Encouragement” (Feast Day)

St. Barnabas was not one of the original Twelve Apostles, but he is honored as an apostle by the early Church because of his powerful witness and missionary work. A native of Cyprus and a member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem, Barnabas was known for his generous heart and unwavering faith.

He is most remembered for introducing St. Paul to the other apostles after Paul’s conversion. While many feared Paul’s past as a persecutor, Barnabas believed in God’s work in him. Together, Paul and Barnabas traveled on missionary journeys, preaching the Gospel and bringing many to Christ.

Barnabas lived out his name—“Son of Encouragement”—by lifting others up, spreading the Good News, and standing firm in times of trial. He is a beautiful example of what it means to be a faithful disciple, encourager, and missionary.

He was martyred for the faith, likely around the year 61 A.D.

Prayer

Saint Barnabas, faithful apostle and joyful missionary,
pray that we may have the courage to share Christ’s love with others.
Help us to be encouragers in our families and communities,
and to walk always in the light of the Risen Lord. Amen.
