Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church
Feast Day: June 13
Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, Portugal, is one of the most beloved saints in the Church. Though he initially joined the Augustinian canons, inspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan friars, he later became a powerful preacher, doctor of theology, and devoted Franciscan friar.
His life was marked by extraordinary love for the poor and sick, eloquent preaching grounded in Scripture, and a deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He was instrumental in combating heresy, earning the title “Hammer of Heretics.” Miraculous stories—such as preaching to fish—highlight his close walk with God
Canonized less than a year after his death in 1231, Saint Anthony was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946 for his profound teachings
