Saint of the Day: St. Joseph Cafasso

The Priest of the Gallows

Feast Day: June 23
Patron of Prisoners and Prison Chaplains

Short Biography:

Saint Joseph Cafasso was born in Italy in 1811 and became a holy and beloved diocesan priest. Known for his deep spirituality, wisdom, and compassion, he dedicated much of his ministry to teaching seminarians and bringing the love of Christ to prisoners—especially those condemned to death.

He earned the nickname “The Priest of the Gallows” because of his tireless work comforting and converting those awaiting execution. With gentleness and courage, he would walk with them to the scaffold, urging them to repent and trust in God’s mercy.

Joseph was also a mentor and spiritual director to Saint John Bosco, who later founded the Salesians and referred to Cafasso as his guiding light. He lived a life of poverty, humility, and intense charity, and died in 1860. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

Prayer:

Saint Joseph Cafasso, gentle shepherd of souls and friend to the condemned, pray for us to have hearts full of mercy, courage to love the outcast, and trust in God’s boundless compassion. Amen.
