June 24 – The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Feast Day: June 24
Patron of: Baptism, converts, and preparation for Christ
Biography:
On June 24, the Church celebrates the birth of Saint John the Baptist, one of only three birthdays honored in the liturgical calendar (the others are Jesus and Mary). John was chosen by God to be the forerunner of the Messiah, preparing the way for Jesus with his powerful call to repentance.
Born to elderly parents Zechariah and Elizabeth (relatives of the Virgin Mary), John leapt in his mother’s womb at the presence of Christ during the Visitation. He grew to become a prophet living in the desert, preaching and baptizing in the Jordan River. His message was simple but strong: “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”
John baptized Jesus and witnessed the Holy Spirit descend upon Him. He later died a martyr’s death, beheaded for defending the truth and standing against the sin of King Herod.
Prayer:
Saint John the Baptist, fearless prophet and humble servant,
prepare our hearts for Christ.
Pray that we may live with boldness, purity, and faith.
Amen.
