What is St. Thomas known for?
St. Thomas, also known as “Didymus” (the Twin), was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is best remembered for his sincere honesty—when first told of Christ’s Resurrection, he confessed, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails…and place my finger into the mark of the nails…I will never believe.” (John 20:25) Eight days later, Christ appeared to him and invited him to touch His wounds, at which Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)
After Pentecost, St. Thomas carried the Gospel eastward, bringing Christ to Persia and finally to India, where he founded Christian communities along the Malabar Coast. Tradition holds he was martyred in Mylapore (modern Chennai) around the year 72 AD, pierced by a spear for his faith.
St. Thomas’s journey—from doubt to unwavering belief—encourages us to seek the Risen Lord with both honesty and courage.
Prayer
Risen Lord, You met St. Thomas in his doubt and led him to faith. Grant us the grace to seek You honestly in our struggles, to touch Your wounds with trust, and to proclaim You as our Lord and God. Amen.
