Saint of the Day: Saints Perpetua and Felicity

Saints Perpetua and Felicity are among the most beloved martyrs of the early Church. They lived in Carthage in North Africa during the persecution of Christians under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus in the year 203.

Perpetua was a young noblewoman and a new mother, while Felicity was her servant who was expecting a child. Both women had recently embraced the Christian faith and refused to renounce Christ despite intense pressure from the authorities and their families.

Perpetua’s own father pleaded with her to abandon her faith to save her life, but she remained firm, saying she could not call herself anything other than what she was—a Christian.

While imprisoned, Felicity gave birth to a baby girl just days before the execution. The two women, along with several companions, faced martyrdom with courage and peace, strengthening one another in faith. Their witness inspired many early Christians and continues to inspire believers today.

Saints Perpetua and Felicity remind us that faith in Christ is worth more than any earthly security, and that courage and trust in God can overcome even the greatest trials.

Did You Know?

Saint Perpetua left behind a personal diary describing her imprisonment and visions. It is one of the earliest surviving writings from a Christian woman and provides a powerful testimony of faith.
