Saint of the Day: Saint Matilda of Ringelheim

Saint Matilda of Ringelheim was a holy queen known for her deep faith, generosity, and care for the poor. She was born around the year 895 in Saxony, in present-day Germany, and was raised in a monastery where she received a strong Christian education.

Matilda later married Henry the Fowler, who became the King of Germany. As queen, Matilda used her position not for personal wealth or power but to help those in need. She generously supported monasteries, churches, and charitable works, and she was especially devoted to helping the poor and the suffering.

After the death of her husband, Matilda experienced difficulties with her own sons, who accused her of spending too much of the royal wealth on charity. Despite these trials, she remained patient, humble, and trusting in God.

Later in life, she dedicated herself even more to prayer and works of mercy, founding several monasteries and continuing to care for the poor until her death in 968.

Saint Matilda’s life reminds us that true greatness comes from humility, charity, and trust in God, no matter our position in life.
