Saint Albert Chmielowski is remembered as a saint of mercy, compassion, and radical love for the poor.
Born in 1845 in Poland, Albert Chmielowski showed great talent as an artist and painter. As a young man, he also fought for his country during a political uprising and suffered severe injuries, losing one of his legs. Despite his physical suffering, he continued pursuing art and gained recognition for his work.
Yet God was calling him to something greater. After a profound spiritual conversion, Albert gave up his artistic career to dedicate his life entirely to serving the poor, homeless, and abandoned. He saw Christ in every suffering person and believed that serving the needy was serving Jesus Himself.
He founded the Albertine Brothers and Sisters, religious communities devoted to caring for the poor. Saint Albert became known for his famous words: “You must be good as bread.” Just as bread nourishes and is shared with all, he believed Christians must become a source of goodness and mercy for others.
Saint Albert Chmielowski teaches us that true holiness is found in selfless love and compassionate service.
