Prayer for the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Heavenly Father,
Source of all light and joy,
You formed Saint John in his mother’s womb
and filled him with the Holy Spirit
to be the burning lamp that pointed to the true Light.
Grant us, we pray,
the same courageous faith that made John
a voice crying in the wilderness.
Give us a repentant heart that turns away from sin,
a humble spirit that says “He must increase, I must decrease,”
and a burning love that prepares the way for Christ in our own lives.
As we celebrate his birth today,
help us to walk in the path of salvation,
to speak truth with charity,
and to lead others to Jesus with the same joyful hope
that filled the heart of the Baptist. Through the intercession of Saint John,
may our families and our world be renewed in holiness,
so that every heart may be ready to welcome your Son.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
