About Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in honor of her appearances to St. Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France in 1858. Between February 11 and July 16 of that year, the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to 14-year-old Bernadette in the grotto of Massabielle, near the town of Lourdes.
During these apparitions, the Lady, dressed in white with a blue sash and golden roses on her feet, revealed herself as the “Immaculate Conception.” This title affirmed the dogma proclaimed just four years earlier, in 1854, by Pope Pius IX, declaring Mary to have been conceived without original sin.
Our Lady called for prayer, penance, and conversion. She asked that a chapel be built at the site and instructed Bernadette to dig in the dirt, from which a spring of water miraculously emerged. That spring continues to flow today and is associated with numerous documented healings and miracles, making Lourdes one of the most visited Marian shrines and pilgrimage sites in the world.
Though Bernadette never sought fame, her humility and faithfulness became a witness to millions. She was canonized a saint in 1933.
