Lent is a sacred season in the Catholic Church—a forty-day journey of conversion, repentance, and spiritual renewal that prepares us for the celebration of Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday, leading us into the Paschal Triduum.
The forty days remind us of Jesus’ own forty days in the desert, where He fasted, prayed, and overcame temptation. In the same spirit, Catholics use Lent as a time to draw closer to God and turn away from anything that keeps the heart from Him.
During Lent, the Church invites us to focus on three ancient pillars of Christian life:
1. Prayer
Deepening our relationship with God through daily prayer, Scripture, the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and Eucharistic Adoration.
2. Fasting
Offering small sacrifices, simplifying our life, and mastering our desires so the soul can grow in freedom.
3. Almsgiving
Showing mercy by giving to the poor, helping the suffering, and practicing works of charity.
Lent is not simply about what we “give up.”
It is about what we become—more humble, more loving, more forgiving, more like Christ.
Above all, Lent reminds us of God’s mercy. It is a season to return to the Sacrament of Confession, to reconcile with others, and to allow Jesus to heal the wounds of the heart.
As we walk through these forty days, our sacrifices are not meant to burden us but to prepare a place in our soul for the joy of Easter—when Christ rises and brings new life to the world.
