What Is Purgatory? A Simple Catholic Explanation

Purgatory is a state of loving purification for souls who die in God’s friendship but still need to be cleansed before entering the perfect holiness of Heaven. It is not a second chance after death. It is God’s mercy finishing the work of grace within us.

The Church teaches that even when sins are forgiven, the wounds left by sin—the attachments, habits, and spiritual damage—often remain. Purgatory is where God heals, restores, and perfects the soul so it can enter His presence with complete purity and joy.

Why Does Purgatory Exist?

Because God is both just and merciful.

  • His justice requires that all sin and all attachment to sin be removed.
  • His mercy provides a place where this cleansing happens in love.

Purgatory is not God’s anger—it is His tender love, preparing His children for Heaven.

Biblical Foundations

Scripture supports the reality of purification after death:

  • “Nothing unclean shall enter [Heaven].” (Revelation 21:27)
  • Judas Maccabeus prayed for the dead (2 Maccabees 12:46), showing the belief that the dead can be purified.
  • St. Paul teaches that a person can be saved “through fire” (1 Corinthians 3:15), a clear image of purification.

And Jesus Himself gives a parable that perfectly reflects this truth:

The Parable of the Debtor (Matthew 5:25–26)

Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. -Matthew 5:25-26

Jesus warns that a person who still owes something spiritually will not be released
“until you have paid the last penny.”

This does not refer to Hell—because in Hell no one is ever released.
Rather, it reflects a temporary state where a debt is repaid and the soul is purified before entering full communion with God.

This matches precisely the Catholic teaching on Purgatory.

How We Can Help Souls in Purgatory

The Church encourages prayer, because love extends beyond death:

  • Holy Mass (the most powerful assistance)
  • The Rosary
  • The Divine Mercy Chaplet
  • Indulgences
  • Acts of sacrifice and charity

Our love gives them comfort and speeds their journey toward Heaven.
