JESUS: GOD OR MAN?

When people are first introduced to Jesus, some confusion can arise as to exactly who Jesus is:
Is He God or is He a man? The short answer is: He is both. The Bible is very clear and spells out exactly who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for us.

Jesus Is God

When the Bible describes Jesus as God, it is communicating that all of who God is, His love, His grace, His power, His eternal nature, His perfect character, is found in Jesus Christ.
Paul understood that Jesus is God:
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9).
The total fullness of God is found in Jesus Christ who is God in the flesh. Jesus, Himself, claimed to be God.

When Jesus was asked by Philip to show them the Father, Jesus responded:
“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:9).
Jesus was saying that if you were looking at Him, it was the same thing as looking at God the Father.

Because in the very essence of their nature, Jesus and God the Father are one. Jesus is God who put on flesh and came to earth in human form, but He is God just like the Father is God and the Holy Spirit is God.
One God in three persons is how God has revealed Himself to us.

Jesus Is Man

While Jesus was God, He was also man. Jesus was born like a human is born (though He was conceived supernaturally through the Holy Spirit).

Jesus grew like little boys grow. Jesus became a full-grown man like boys who grow into men.
From the perspective of being human, Jesus was human like any other person is human.

John 1:14 says: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
Jesus knew what it was to be hungry. Jesus knew what it was to be tempted.

Jesus knew what it was to be human in all that goes with it.
Though human, Jesus did not ever sin. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
Around the age of 33 and after three and a half years of public ministry, Jesus, though completely innocent, was sentenced to death. This fulfilled the plan of God for Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice who could take away our sins and save us from the penalty of sin which is death. But, Jesus did not stay dead.

Three days later Jesus was resurrected from the dead to win the victory over death, hell and the grave and to make that victory available to us. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus is our Savior.

Who Jesus Is Not

Since Jesus is God and came to earth as a man, we cannot diminish who Jesus is. He is not merely a prophet. He is more. He is not merely a good teacher. He is more. He is not merely a good man or historical figure.
He is more. He is God in the flesh who became the perfect sacrifice for our sin. In Jesus Christ, you see God in the flesh who defeats Satan for us.
Jesus is fully God who became fully man so He could fully die and be fully resurrected. In Jesus, God wins our redemption.
