Deacon & Doctor of the Church (c. 306–373)
“The harp of the Holy Spirit.”
St. Ephrem was a deacon and theologian from Nisibis (modern-day southeast Turkey), revered as the greatest hymn‑writer of the ancient Church. He composed countless biblical poems and hymns, weaving deep faith、 vision, and poetic beauty together. So profound was his prayerful praise that he earned the title “Harp of the Holy Spirit.” In recognition of his spiritual and theological gifts, Pope Benedict XV declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1920.
Why We Love Him
- He wrote powerful hymns that taught the Faith in poetic form.
- He defended orthodox belief during challenging theological times.
- Despite living as a desert hermit, his writings continue to inspire believers centuries later.
