Saint of the Day: Saint Philip Neri

On May 26, the Catholic Church honors Saint Philip Neri, known as the “Apostle of Rome” because of his joyful spirit, deep holiness, and love for bringing people closer to God.

Saint Philip Neri was born in Florence, Italy, in 1515. As a young man, he moved to Rome where he dedicated his life to prayer, charity, and serving the poor. He spent many hours in Eucharistic adoration and developed a deep love for Jesus and the Church.

Philip became well known for his joy, humility, and kindness. He believed that holiness and happiness go together, and he often used humor to help people grow closer to God. Many people were inspired by his simple and joyful witness of faith.

He later founded the Congregation of the Oratory, a community of priests focused on prayer, preaching, and spiritual guidance.

Saint Philip especially loved young people and encouraged them to live holy lives while remaining joyful and hopeful. His famous saying was:

“A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one.”

Saint Philip Neri reminds us that holiness is not only found in sacrifice and prayer, but also in joy, kindness, and love for others.

Prayer

Saint Philip Neri, joyful servant of God, pray for us, that we may grow in holiness with cheerful hearts, love Jesus deeply, and bring peace and joy to those around us. Amen.
