Saint Paternus was a 5th–6th century bishop and missionary, remembered for his deep holiness, humility, and dedication to spreading the Christian faith in what is now Normandy.
A Life Dedicated to God
Born in Poitiers around the year 482, Paternus grew up during a time when Christianity was still taking root in parts of Europe. From a young age, he felt called to a life of prayer and holiness.
He eventually embraced the monastic life, seeking solitude and closeness with God. His reputation for virtue and wisdom spread quickly, and many were drawn to him for spiritual guidance.
Bishop and Shepherd
Despite his desire for a quiet life, Paternus was chosen to serve as Bishop of Avranches. In this role, he worked tirelessly to strengthen the faith of the people, preaching the Gospel and guiding his flock with gentleness and courage.
He also collaborated with other holy bishops of his time to defend the truth of the Church and to promote unity among Christians.
A Man of Prayer and Miracles
Saint Paternus was known for his deep prayer life and for miracles attributed to his intercession. His holiness inspired many conversions and renewed faith among the people he served.
