Saint of the Day: Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

Biography
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in present-day New York. She was a Native American of the Mohawk tribe. As a child, she survived smallpox, which left her with weakened eyesight and scars on her face.

At the age of 19, Kateri chose to become a Christian, embracing the Catholic faith with deep devotion. Despite facing strong opposition and persecution from her community, she remained faithful. She eventually fled to a Christian mission village in Canada, where she lived a life of prayer, sacrifice, and charity.

Known for her purity and love for Christ, Kateri dedicated her life completely to God. She died at the young age of 24, and many reported that her scars disappeared shortly after her death. She was canonized in 2012 and is the first Native American saint.
