Saint of the Day: St. Peter Chanel

Saint Peter Chanel (1803–1841) was a French priest and missionary who gave his life bringing the Gospel to the people of the Pacific. He joined the Society of Mary (Marists) and was sent to the remote island of Futuna, where Christianity was not yet established.

With great patience and humility, Peter cared for the sick, baptized children, and gently shared the message of Christ. Though he faced strong opposition from local leaders, he remained peaceful and steadfast in faith.

Eventually, his growing influence led to his martyrdom. Yet, shortly after his death, the very people who had resisted him began to embrace the Christian faith. Today, the island of Futuna is largely Christian—a powerful testimony to the fruit of his sacrifice.

Saint Peter Chanel is remembered as the first martyr of Oceania and a patron of missionaries.

Prayer:
Saint Peter Chanel, faithful missionary and martyr,
help us to share the Gospel with courage and love,
even in the face of hardship.
Pray for all missionaries and for those who have not yet heard the Good News.
Amen.
