On May 19, the Catholic Church honors Saint Celestine V, a humble hermit who unexpectedly became pope and is remembered for his deep holiness, simplicity, and love for prayer.
Born in Italy in the 13th century, Celestine lived a quiet life dedicated to God as a monk and hermit. He spent many years in solitude, prayer, fasting, and service to God, attracting followers who admired his holy way of life.
After a long period without a pope, Church leaders chose Celestine to become pope because of his reputation for wisdom and sanctity. Although he accepted the responsibility with humility, he soon realized that his heart longed for a simple life of prayer rather than leadership and political affairs. After only a few months, he resigned from the papacy — one of the rare popes in history to do so.
Saint Celestine V is remembered for his humility, detachment from worldly power, and desire to seek God above all things. His life reminds us that true greatness is found not in fame or authority, but in holiness and faithfulness to God.
