Saint of the Day: Saints Marcellinus and Peter

On June 2, the Catholic Church honors Saints Marcellinus and Peter, two early Christian martyrs who courageously gave their lives for Christ during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.

Saint Marcellinus was a priest, and Saint Peter was an exorcist. Together they faithfully served the Church and proclaimed the Gospel despite the dangers they faced. During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, they were arrested for their Christian faith and imprisoned.

While in prison, they continued their ministry by encouraging fellow Christians and even converting some of their guards and fellow prisoners to Christ. Their unwavering faith and courage inspired many people to embrace Christianity.

Eventually, Marcellinus and Peter were condemned to death. According to tradition, they were led to a secluded forest where they were executed for refusing to renounce their faith. They willingly accepted martyrdom, trusting completely in Jesus and the promise of eternal life.

Their witness became widely known among the early Christians, and devotion to these holy martyrs quickly spread throughout the Church. Their names were later included in the Roman Canon of the Mass, a sign of the great honor the Church has given them throughout the centuries.

Saints Marcellinus and Peter remind us that faithfulness to Christ is worth every sacrifice. Their example encourages us to remain steadfast in our faith, even when faced with challenges, opposition, or difficulties.

Help us to remain faithful to the Gospel, to trust in God’s promises, and to courageously witness to our Catholic faith in our daily lives.
