Today, the Catholic Church honors Thomas the Apostle, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and a powerful witness to faith.
Saint Thomas is often remembered as “Doubting Thomas” because he struggled to believe in the Resurrection after hearing that Jesus had risen from the dead. When the other apostles told him they had seen the Lord, Thomas replied that he would not believe unless he saw and touched Jesus’ wounds himself.
Eight days later, Jesus appeared again and invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Overwhelmed by the truth, Thomas made one of the most beautiful professions of faith in the Gospel:
“My Lord and my God!” — Gospel of John 20:28
Thomas reminds us that even moments of doubt can lead to deeper faith when we bring our questions to Christ.
According to ancient Christian tradition, Saint Thomas later traveled far beyond the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, eventually reaching India, where he evangelized many people and helped establish Christian communities. He ultimately gave his life as a martyr for Christ.
Saint Thomas is the patron saint of those who struggle with doubt, architects, and builders.
Reflection
Saint Thomas teaches us that faith does not require pretending we never struggle. Sometimes questions, fears, and doubts become the very path through which Jesus draws us closer to Himself.
When you face uncertainty, remember Thomas. Bring your doubts to Jesus and ask for stronger faith.
