Feast Day: September 9
Today, September 9, the Catholic Church honors St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest and missionary who dedicated his life to serving people who were suffering and to proclaiming the love of Jesus Christ.
St. Peter Claver is remembered especially for his ministry to enslaved Africans who arrived in Cartagena, in present-day Colombia. He saw Christ in every person he encountered and spent his life bringing food, medicine, friendship, the Sacraments, and the hope of the Gospel to those who were treated with cruelty and without dignity.
Who Was St. Peter Claver?
St. Peter Claver was born in 1580 in Verdú, Catalonia, Spain. He eventually joined the Society of Jesus and was sent as a missionary to South America.
In Cartagena, he encountered ships carrying enslaved Africans. Rather than turning away from their suffering, Peter went to meet them. He brought them whatever help he could and taught them about the love and mercy of Jesus.
He became known for his extraordinary compassion and his determination to serve those whom society had rejected.
Peter Claver once described his vocation by calling himself a “slave of the slaves.” His entire life became an offering of love and service to Christ through the people who were suffering.
He died on September 8, 1654, and the Church celebrates his memorial on September 9. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888.
What Can We Learn From St. Peter Claver?
St. Peter Claver teaches us that Christian love is not simply something we say—it is something we do.
He did not ask whether people deserved his help. He saw their suffering and responded with compassion.
His life reminds us to:
- See Christ in every person.
- Help those who are suffering.
- Defend the dignity of every human being.
- Be compassionate toward the poor and forgotten.
- Bring hope to people who feel abandoned.
- Serve Jesus through acts of love and mercy.
We do not need to travel across the world to follow his example. We can begin with the people God has placed around us: a family member who is struggling, a neighbor who is lonely, someone who is poor, or a person who simply needs someone to listen.
A Prayer to St. Peter Claver
Dear St. Peter Claver,
You devoted your life to serving those who suffered and to bringing the love of Jesus to people who were forgotten and rejected.
Ask Jesus to give me the same compassionate heart that you had.
Help me to see Christ in every person I meet. Teach me not to ignore the suffering of others, but to respond with love, patience, courage, and generosity.
Pray for those who are poor, persecuted, oppressed, lonely, and forgotten. Intercede especially for those who are suffering today and have no one to help them.
St. Peter Claver, help me to become a faithful servant of Christ and to bring His love wherever I go.
Pray for my family and for all those whom I carry in my heart.

Today, ask yourself:
“Whom can I help today?”
Offer one small act of love for someone who is suffering or in need. It could be a prayer, a phone call, an encouraging word, an act of generosity, or simply taking time to listen.
Like St. Peter Claver, let us remember that when we serve those in need, we are serving Christ.
St. Peter Claver, pray for us and help us to love Jesus more deeply through our love for others.
