Feast Day: September 16
Today, September 16, the Catholic Church honors Saint Cornelius, Pope and Martyr, and Saint Cyprian, Bishop and Martyr, two great shepherds of the early Church who remained faithful to Christ during times of persecution and division.
Their lives remind us that the Church must be built upon faith, mercy, courage, and unity.
Who Was Saint Cornelius?
Saint Cornelius was elected Pope in the year 251, during a very difficult period for Christians. The Church was facing persecution as well as an internal dispute concerning Christians who had denied their faith during persecution and later repented.
Cornelius defended the Church’s authority to welcome repentant sinners back into communion after appropriate penance. He opposed both excessive leniency and the refusal to forgive those who sincerely returned to Christ.
His friend and fellow bishop, Saint Cyprian of Carthage, supported him in defending the unity of the Church.
Cornelius was later exiled during the persecution under Emperor Gallus. He died in exile in 253 and was honored as a martyr. His body was eventually brought back to Rome and buried in the Catacomb of Saint Callixtus.
Who Was Saint Cyprian?
Saint Cyprian was born in Carthage in North Africa around the year 210. Before becoming a Christian, he was a teacher of rhetoric and a lawyer.
After his conversion to Christianity, he devoted his life completely to Christ. He became Bishop of Carthage in 249 and became one of the most important Christian writers and pastors of the third century.
Cyprian worked tirelessly to strengthen the Church and encourage Christians during persecution. His writings provide an important witness to the faith and worship of the early Church.
During the persecution under Emperor Valerian, Cyprian was arrested and eventually executed for his faith. He was martyred in 258, remaining faithful to Christ until the end.
Saints Who Defended the Unity of the Church
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian are especially remembered for their friendship and their defense of Church unity.
They understood that Christians could face difficult disagreements without abandoning the unity of the Church. Their correspondence shows the close relationship between the Church in Rome and the Church in Carthage.
The Catholic Church continues to commemorate both saints together in the First Eucharistic Prayer, remembering them as martyrs united in love for the Church.
What Can We Learn From Saints Cornelius and Cyprian?
Their lives teach us several important lessons:
1. Remain faithful during difficult times.
Neither persecution nor opposition caused them to abandon Christ.
2. Trust in God’s mercy.
Saint Cornelius defended the possibility of reconciliation for Christians who sincerely repented after falling away.
3. Pray for the unity of the Church.
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian worked together to protect the unity of Christ’s Church.
4. Be courageous in defending the faith.
Saint Cyprian’s life and writings show the courage required to remain faithful when Christianity was under persecution.
5. Remember that the Church belongs to Christ.
Their lives remind us that human difficulties and disagreements must never make us lose sight of Jesus Christ.
Prayer to Saints Cornelius and Cyprian
O glorious Saints Cornelius and Cyprian,
faithful servants and courageous martyrs of Jesus Christ,
pray for the Holy Church and for all Christians throughout the world.
Help us to remain faithful to Christ
when we experience difficulties, trials, or persecution.
Teach us to have compassion for sinners who sincerely repent,
and help us to seek reconciliation and peace.
Pray that the Church may remain united in faith,
strong in charity, and faithful to the teachings of Christ.
Saint Cornelius, pray for us.
Saint Cyprian, pray for us.
Holy martyrs of Christ, pray for us.
May we never be afraid to follow Jesus,
and may we remain faithful to Him until the end of our lives.

Lord Jesus Christ,
through the intercession of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian,
give me the grace to remain faithful to You.
Strengthen my faith when I am afraid,
give me courage when I face difficulties,
and teach me to forgive as You forgive.
Help me to pray for the unity of Your Church
and to bring Your love and mercy to those around me.
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for me
and bring my intentions before the throne of God.
