When we face temptation, fear, spiritual trials, or the presence of evil in our lives, the Catholic Church teaches us to turn to God with faith, humility, and perseverance.
Prayer is not a magical formula or a way of controlling supernatural powers. It is an act of trust in God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes prayer as a spiritual battle, because the Christian life involves resisting temptation and remaining faithful to God.
Our ultimate protection is found in Jesus Christ. Through prayer, we ask God for His grace, protection, strength, and deliverance from evil. We may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints to intercede for us.
Here are seven traditional Catholic prayers and devotions that can help us remain close to God during times of spiritual difficulty.
1. Holy Rosary
The Holy Rosary is one of the most beloved Catholic devotions and a powerful way to meditate on the life of Jesus Christ.
As we pray the Rosary, we reflect on the mysteries of Christ’s life while asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for us. The Rosary continually brings our hearts back to Jesus: His Incarnation, His Passion, His Resurrection, and His glory.
The Rosary can be especially meaningful when we are experiencing fear, temptation, anxiety, or spiritual difficulty. Rather than allowing our attention to remain focused on evil, the Rosary directs our minds toward Christ and the mysteries of salvation.
Scripture
Genesis 3:15 — “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers.”
Luke 1:42 — “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”
Luke 1:46–47 — “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
The Rosary is ultimately a Christ-centered prayer. The Catechism teaches that Christian meditation should lead us toward the knowledge and love of Jesus, and specifically identifies the Rosary as a form of prayerful meditation on the mysteries of Christ.
A Simple Way to Pray the Rosary for Protection
Begin with the Sign of the Cross and offer the Rosary to Jesus for your intentions.
You may pray:
“Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, protect me and my family from evil and keep us close to Your Sacred Heart. Help us remain faithful to You. Amen.”
Then pray the Rosary slowly and attentively.
2. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel is especially associated with the spiritual battle against evil.
In the Book of Revelation, St. Michael and his angels fight against the dragon. In the Letter of Jude, St. Michael is described as contending with the devil.
Scripture
Revelation 12:7–9 — Michael and his angels fight against the dragon.
Jude 1:9 — Michael the Archangel contends with the devil.
The traditional Prayer to St. Michael asks God to defend us through St. Michael’s intercession and to protect us against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
Pope Francis also called for the faithful to pray the Rosary and the Prayer to St. Michael for protection and help in the struggle against evil.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
3. Prayer to the Precious Blood of Jesus
The Precious Blood of Jesus reminds us of the immense price of our redemption.
Christ gave Himself for us on the Cross. His Precious Blood is not a magical substance or an object of superstition; devotion to the Precious Blood points us toward the sacrifice of Jesus and His saving love.
When praying this devotion, we place our trust in Christ and His victory over sin and death.
Scripture
1 Peter 1:18–19 — We were redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ.”
Revelation 12:11 — “They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb.”
Ephesians 1:7 — “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.”
Prayer
Precious Blood of Jesus, shed for us upon the Cross,
we place our trust in Your saving love.
Cover us with Your mercy and keep us faithful to Christ. Protect our families from evil, temptation, and sin, and give us the grace to remain close to You.
Lord Jesus, strengthen us by Your grace and lead us always in the way of holiness.
Precious Blood of Jesus, save us.
Amen.
4. The Our Father
The Our Father is the prayer Jesus Himself taught His disciples.
It is one of the most important prayers in the Christian life because it teaches us to turn to God as our Father, seek His kingdom, submit ourselves to His will, ask for our daily bread, seek forgiveness, and ask to be delivered from evil.
Scripture
Matthew 6:9–13 — Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray.
Matthew 6:13 — “Deliver us from evil.”
John 17:15 — Jesus prays that the Father will protect His disciples from the evil one.
The final petition of the Our Father is particularly important when praying for protection: “Deliver us from evil.”
The Catechism explains that Jesus’ own priestly prayer fulfills the great petitions of the Our Father, including deliverance from evil.
Pray the Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
When you are afraid or troubled, you do not need complicated words. You can simply turn to God and pray the Our Father with faith.
5. Prayer Through the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Catholics do not worship Mary. We honor her as the Mother of Jesus and ask her to pray for us.
At Cana, Mary brought a human need to Jesus. Throughout Catholic tradition, Christians have continued to ask for her maternal intercession.
The Catechism teaches that we can entrust our cares and petitions to Mary and ask her to pray for us.
Scripture
Luke 1:48 — “All generations will call me blessed.”
John 2:1–11 — Mary intercedes at Cana and brings the need to Jesus.
Luke 1:38 — “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
A Prayer for Mary’s Intercession
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for me and my family.
Lead us always closer to your Son, Jesus Christ. Ask Him to protect us from evil, strengthen us against temptation, and keep our hearts faithful to God.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
The traditional Sub Tuum Praesidium is another beautiful prayer asking the Blessed Virgin Mary for protection:
“We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God.”
