A Missionary of Mercy and Courage

Saint John Francis Regis was a Jesuit priest known for his tireless missionary work in 17th-century France. Born into a noble family, he joined the Jesuits at age 18 and was ordained a priest at 33. He devoted his life to evangelizing the rural poor, hearing confessions for hours on end, and preaching the Gospel with boldness and love.

He had a special concern for marginalized women, including former prostitutes, helping them find dignity and a new life by teaching them trades like lace-making. His deep humility, compassion, and zeal made him beloved by many — and a target of those who resisted reform.

Despite harsh weather and dangerous travels, he never gave up. He died of pneumonia after a mission journey, offering his final breath in service to God.

Prayer to Saint John Francis Regis:

Saint John Francis Regis, tireless preacher of the Gospel,
help us to bring Christ’s mercy to those in need.
Teach us to serve with love, to speak truth with courage,
and to work tirelessly for the salvation of souls. Amen.
