Feast Day: July 22
On July 22, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, one of the most beloved disciples of Jesus and the first witness to His glorious Resurrection. Because she was sent by the risen Christ to announce the Resurrection to the Apostles, she is honored as the “Apostle to the Apostles.”
A Faithful Disciple of Christ
The Gospels tell us that Jesus delivered Mary Magdalene from seven demons (Luke 8:2). After experiencing His mercy and healing, she became one of His most devoted followers. She accompanied Jesus during His public ministry, helped support Him and the Apostles, and remained faithful when many others fled.
Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the Cross as Jesus suffered and died. Her unwavering love for Christ kept her close to Him even in His darkest hour.
The First Witness of the Resurrection
Early on Easter morning, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. Finding the tomb empty, she remained there weeping. It was then that the risen Lord appeared to her.
At first, she did not recognize Him until He gently called her by name:
“Mary.”
Immediately she recognized Him and replied:
“Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Jesus then entrusted her with a unique mission:
“Go to my brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” (John 20:17)
She faithfully carried this joyful message to the Apostles, becoming the first person to proclaim that Christ had risen from the dead.
An Example of Repentance and Love
St. Mary Magdalene reminds us that no one is beyond God’s mercy. Her life demonstrates the transforming power of Christ’s forgiveness and the joy that comes from following Him with an undivided heart.
Her courage, fidelity, and love continue to inspire Christians throughout the world. She teaches us to remain faithful to Jesus during times of sorrow, to seek Him with perseverance, and to proclaim His Resurrection with confidence.
Prayer
O glorious St. Mary Magdalene, faithful disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ, you experienced His boundless mercy and became the first witness of His Resurrection. Pray for us, that we may turn away from sin, remain faithful to Christ in every trial, and boldly proclaim the Good News with our lives.
Help us to love Jesus with all our hearts and never lose hope in His mercy.
Through your powerful intercession, may we one day rejoice with you in the presence of the risen Lord.
