Feast Day: July 24
On July 24, the Catholic Church honors St. Charbel Makhlouf, a Lebanese Maronite monk, priest, and hermit whose life of prayer, penance, and complete devotion to God has inspired millions around the world. Known for his profound holiness and the many miracles attributed to his intercession, St. Charbel remains one of the most beloved saints of the Middle East.
A Life Dedicated to God
St. Charbel was born as Youssef Antoun Makhlouf on May 8, 1828, in the village of Bekaa Kafra, Lebanon. Raised in a devout Christian family, he developed a deep love for prayer from an early age.
At the age of twenty-three, he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order, taking the religious name Charbel in honor of an early Christian martyr. He was ordained a priest in 1859 and spent many years living a life of obedience, humility, silence, and hard work within his monastery.
A Holy Hermit
Longing for even greater union with God, St. Charbel received permission to live as a hermit near the Monastery of St. Maron in Annaya. For twenty-three years, he embraced a life of solitude, fasting, continual prayer, and devotion to the Holy Eucharist.
He celebrated the Divine Liturgy with extraordinary reverence and spent long hours in Eucharistic adoration. His holiness attracted many people who sought his prayers and spiritual guidance.
Miracles Through His Intercession
St. Charbel died on December 24, 1898. Soon after his death, extraordinary signs were reported at his tomb, including a mysterious light and numerous miraculous healings. Pilgrims from around the world continue to visit his shrine in Annaya, seeking his powerful intercession.
Thousands of miracles have been attributed to St. Charbel, making him one of the most widely venerated saints of the modern era. He was canonized by Pope St. Paul VI in 1977.

St. Charbel teaches us that true holiness is found in complete surrender to God. His life reminds us that silence, prayer, humility, and faithful devotion to the Holy Eucharist draw us closer to Christ.
