The Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas)
On February 2, the Church celebrates the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. This feast commemorates the day when the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph brought the Infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, in obedience to the Law of Moses.
In the Temple, they encountered Simeon and Anna, who recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah. Simeon proclaimed Him as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:32). This moment reveals Christ as the Light of the world, fulfilling God’s promise of salvation.
Candles are blessed on this day to symbolize Christ, the true Light who dispels darkness and guides our path. The Presentation reminds us to offer our lives to God with obedience, humility, and trust, just as Mary and Joseph did.
Did You Know?
The feast is called Candlemas because of the traditional blessing of candles, representing Christ as the Light of the world.
Prayer for the Presentation of the Lord
Lord Jesus Christ,
Light of the nations and glory of Your people,
shine in our hearts and guide our steps.
Help us present our lives to the Father
with faith, obedience, and love.
May Your light drive away all darkness
and lead us to eternal life.
Amen.
