Saint of the Day: Saint Landry of Paris

On June 10, the Catholic Church honors Saint Landry of Paris, a compassionate bishop known for his extraordinary charity toward the poor and his dedication to serving those in need.

Saint Landry lived during the seventh century and served as Bishop of Paris, France. He is remembered as a shepherd who cared deeply for the people entrusted to him, especially the poor, the sick, and the suffering.

During a severe famine that struck Paris, Saint Landry sold many of the Church’s possessions to provide food and assistance to those who were starving. Rather than preserving wealth, he chose to use every available resource to help those in desperate need. His actions reflected the teachings of Jesus, who commanded His followers to care for the hungry and the poor.

Saint Landry is also credited with founding a hospital in Paris that eventually became the famous Hôtel-Dieu, one of the oldest hospitals in the world. Through this work, he ensured that the sick and vulnerable would receive care and compassion.

Throughout his life, Saint Landry demonstrated that Christian leadership is rooted in service. He combined prayer, pastoral care, and practical charity, becoming a living example of Christ’s love for the poor.

After his death around the year 661, Saint Landry was honored for his holiness and generosity. His legacy continues to inspire Catholics to practice charity and to recognize Christ in those who are suffering.
