On June 11, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint Barnabas, a faithful disciple of Jesus, missionary, and companion of Saint Paul. Although he was not one of the Twelve Apostles, Barnabas played a vital role in the growth of the early Church and is honored as an Apostle because of his extraordinary service to the Gospel.
Saint Barnabas was born on the island of Cyprus and was originally named Joseph. The Apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “Son of Encouragement.” This title perfectly reflected his character, as he was known for his generosity, kindness, and ability to strengthen the faith of others.
One of the first Christians after Pentecost, Barnabas generously sold his property and donated the proceeds to support the growing Christian community in Jerusalem. His selfless example inspired many believers to place their trust in God and care for those in need.
Barnabas is especially remembered for his friendship with Saint Paul. After Paul’s dramatic conversion, many Christians were hesitant to trust him because of his past persecution of the Church. Barnabas welcomed Paul, defended him before the Apostles, and helped him become accepted within the Christian community.
Together, Barnabas and Paul traveled throughout the Roman world preaching the Gospel, establishing churches, and bringing countless people to Christ. Their missionary journeys helped spread Christianity far beyond Jerusalem and laid the foundation for the Church’s growth among the Gentiles.
The Acts of the Apostles describes Barnabas as “a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.” His life demonstrated the power of encouragement, generosity, and trust in God’s plan.
According to tradition, Barnabas eventually returned to Cyprus, where he continued preaching the Gospel and ultimately suffered martyrdom for his faith. His courageous witness remains an inspiration to Christians throughout the world.
Reflection
Saint Barnabas teaches us the importance of encouraging others in their faith. A kind word, a helping hand, or an act of generosity can strengthen someone who is struggling. Like Barnabas, we are called to support one another and help lead people closer to Christ.
