Who Was St. Raymond Nonnatus?

St. Raymond Nonnatus was a Spanish Mercedarian friar and priest who dedicated his life to helping Christians who had been captured and enslaved.

His surname, Nonnatus, means “not born” or “not naturally born.” According to tradition, his mother died before he could be delivered naturally, and he was brought into the world by an emergency procedure. Because of this, he became especially associated with safe childbirth and expectant mothers.

Raymond joined the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians. The order was founded to ransom Christians who had been taken captive.

According to tradition, Raymond traveled to North Africa to negotiate the release of Christian captives. When he ran out of money, he offered himself as a hostage in exchange for prisoners.

A Witness of Courage

Tradition tells us that Raymond endured imprisonment and suffering because of his determination to bring hope to Christians who were being held captive.

Even when threatened and mistreated, he continued preaching the Gospel and encouraging those who were suffering.

His life became a powerful witness to charity, courage, faith, and self-sacrifice.
