Memorial of St. Gregory the Great

Feast Day: September 3

Patronage: Teachers, musicians, singers, and popes.

Biography
St. Gregory the Great (c. 540–604) was born into a noble Roman family, but he chose a life of humility and service to God. After serving as a civil official, he entered the monastic life, dedicating himself to prayer and study. In 590, he was elected Pope, becoming one of the most influential leaders in the history of the Church.

Gregory was known for his deep humility, calling himself the Servant of the Servants of God, a title still used by popes today. He reformed Church governance, strengthened missionary efforts—sending St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize England—and cared for the poor during times of famine and plague.

He also contributed greatly to the Church’s liturgy and sacred music; the Gregorian Chant is named after him. Recognized as both Pope and Doctor of the Church, St. Gregory’s writings and example of pastoral charity continue to inspire Christians around the world.

Prayer

O God, who cared for your people by the leadership of St. Gregory,
grant that through his intercession we may grow in wisdom and humility,
and serve you with the same zeal and charity.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
