About Blessed Michael J. McGivney
Blessed Michael J. McGivney (1852–1890) was an American Catholic priest best known as the founder of the Knights of Columbus, one of the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organizations. Born in Connecticut to Irish immigrant parents, he devoted his priestly ministry to serving working-class families, immigrants, widows, orphans, and those in financial hardship.
Recognizing the many challenges faced by Catholic families, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 to provide spiritual support, mutual aid, and financial assistance while encouraging men to grow in their Catholic faith. His vision of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism continues to guide the organization today.
Blessed Michael was beatified on October 31, 2020, after the Vatican recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession. He is remembered for his humility, pastoral compassion, and tireless dedication to the Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 13.
