Feast Day: September 29

Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the three archangels whose names are revealed in Sacred Scripture.

The angels are spiritual creatures created by God. They serve Him and carry out His will, and throughout the Bible we see them protecting, guiding, and bringing God’s messages to His people.

The Church honors Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael together on September 29.

Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael is the great defender of God’s people.

His name means “Who is like God?”

In the Book of Revelation, Saint Michael and his angels battle against the dragon:

“Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon.” — Revelation 12:7

Saint Michael is traditionally honored as the protector and defender of the Church. Catholics especially ask for his intercession in times of spiritual battle and temptation.

His name itself reminds us that no creature can compare with God. When we face evil or temptation, we should place our trust not in our own strength but in the power and grace of God.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel

Saint Gabriel is the messenger of God who announced the coming of Christ.

His name means “God is my strength.”

Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation and announced that she would become the Mother of the Son of God:

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” — Luke 1:28

Gabriel then revealed God’s plan to Mary:

“You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” — Luke 1:31

Mary responded with humility and faith:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38

Through Saint Gabriel’s message, we are reminded of the mystery of the Incarnation: the eternal Son of God came into the world and became man for our salvation.

Saint Raphael the Archangel

Saint Raphael appears prominently in the Book of Tobit.

His name means “God heals.”

Raphael was sent by God to accompany the young Tobias on his journey. He protected and guided him and eventually helped bring healing to Tobias’ family.

At the end of the story, Raphael reveals:

“I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and serve before the glory of the Lord.” — Tobit 12:15

Saint Raphael is therefore traditionally associated with healing, travelers, and God’s loving guidance.

Catholics may ask for his intercession for those who are sick, for families, and for those who are beginning an important journey.

What Can We Learn from the Three Archangels?

The three archangels remind us of different aspects of God’s loving care.

Saint Michael reminds us to remain faithful to God and to stand firm against evil.

Saint Gabriel reminds us to listen to God’s Word and respond with faith, like the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Saint Raphael reminds us that God accompanies us on our journey and brings healing according to His divine will.

Although the archangels have different missions, their purpose is the same: to serve God and carry out His will.

They do not draw attention to themselves. Their service points us toward God.

A Prayer to the Holy Archangels

O glorious Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael,
holy archangels of God,
pray for us and protect us.

Saint Michael, defend us in spiritual battle
and protect us from evil.

Saint Gabriel, help us to hear God’s Word
and respond with faith and humility.

Saint Raphael, accompany us on our earthly journey
and pray for those who seek healing and peace.

Holy Archangels,
guide us closer to Jesus Christ
and help us remain faithful to God throughout our lives.

May we always seek God’s will
and trust in His divine providence.

Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael,
pray for us.
