Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2025)
What is Lent?
Lent is the period of penance preceding Easter.
Lent begins with the Wednesday after Quinquagesima, which is called Ash Wednesday, because on that day the making with ashes on the foreheads of the faithful takes place. It reminds us of our origin from the dust.
Ash Wednesday is forty-six days before Easter, but we say Lent is forty days in length because we do not count six Sundays, on which no fasting is prescribed anywhere throughout the Church.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” -Genesis 3:19
Why we should fast?
Here are three excellent reasons!
-To Repair for our past sins
-To cast out Devils (Jesus says:some devils can be cast only by prayer and fasting).
-Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Lourdes said: For conversions of poor sinners
A Prayer for Ash Wednesday
Lord, as I begin this season of Lent,
I turn to You with a humble heart.
Help me to remember that I am dust,
and to You, I will return.
Grant me the strength to fast, to pray,
and to give alms with a sincere spirit.
Through this season of penance,
purify my heart and soul.
Help me to seek You above all things,
to walk in Your ways,
and to renew my commitment to love and serve You.
May my actions reflect Your mercy and grace,
and may I be drawn closer to You,
now and always.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Make this Lent the best of your life (Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving).
