Saint of the Day: Saint Philip Neri (1515–1595)

(May 26, 2025)

Patron of joy, humor, and the city of Rome

Brief Biography:

Saint Philip Neri, often called the “Apostle of Rome,” was known for his infectious joy, warm heart, and deep love for Christ. Born in Florence, he moved to Rome as a young man and began serving the poor, teaching children, and guiding young adults in the faith. He founded the Congregation of the Oratory—priests living in community without vows—focused on preaching, prayer, and music.

Though a deeply holy priest and mystic, Philip was also known for his sense of humor and humility. He reminded others not to take themselves too seriously and that holiness and joy go hand in hand.

He died peacefully in Rome on May 26, 1595, and remains one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic Church.
