Feast Day: September 18
Today, September 18, the Catholic Church honors St. Joseph of Cupertino, a humble Franciscan priest whose life was marked by extraordinary prayer, deep humility, and an intense love for Jesus Christ.
St. Joseph was born on June 17, 1603, in Cupertino, Italy, into a very poor family. His father died before his birth, and his family experienced great financial hardship. From his childhood, Joseph had a strong love for prayer and a desire to dedicate his life to God.
A Difficult Path to the Priesthood
Joseph struggled greatly with his studies and found it difficult to learn. His first attempts to enter religious life were unsuccessful. Yet he did not give up.
Eventually, he was accepted by the Conventual Franciscans, where he first served in humble duties. His simplicity, obedience, devotion, and love for God gradually became evident to the friars.
Joseph was eventually ordained a priest in 1628.
His story is a beautiful reminder that God does not measure us according to worldly standards. What may appear to be weakness in the eyes of the world can become an opportunity to rely completely upon God’s grace.
St. Joseph and His Extraordinary Prayer
St. Joseph of Cupertino is particularly remembered for extraordinary mystical experiences during prayer, including accounts of levitation.
These experiences sometimes brought him unwanted attention and became a burden rather than something he sought for himself. He was transferred several times and was even investigated by the Inquisition, which ultimately cleared him.
But the extraordinary experiences were not what made Joseph a saint.
His true greatness was found in his humility, obedience, patience, prayer, and love of God.
He continued to pray even during times of temptation, suffering, and spiritual darkness.
The Humility of St. Joseph of Cupertino
St. Joseph teaches us a very important lesson:
We do not need to be great in the eyes of the world to be great in the eyes of God.
Joseph struggled with things that came easily to others. Yet he trusted God and continued forward.
Instead of allowing his difficulties to separate him from God, he turned them into opportunities for prayer and dependence upon divine grace.
His life can encourage anyone who feels inadequate, discouraged, or unsuccessful.
God can work through our weaknesses when we place ourselves completely in His hands.
Patron Saint of Students
St. Joseph of Cupertino is especially known as a patron of students and those taking examinations. He is also associated with aviators and air travelers because of the traditional accounts of his mystical levitations.
Students who are struggling with their studies can ask St. Joseph to intercede for them—not simply for success, but for peace, perseverance, wisdom, and trust in God.
What St. Joseph of Cupertino Teaches Us
St. Joseph teaches us:
- Pray when you are struggling.
- Trust God when you feel inadequate.
- Remain humble when you receive blessings.
- Do not give up because of your weaknesses.
- Obey God even when the path is difficult.
- Place your talents and limitations into God’s hands.
His life reminds us that holiness is not about being perfect according to the world’s standards.
Holiness is about loving God faithfully and allowing His grace to transform us.
A Prayer to St. Joseph of Cupertino
O humble St. Joseph of Cupertino,
you experienced many difficulties in your life, yet you never stopped trusting in God.
You struggled with your studies and faced rejection, misunderstanding, and suffering, but you continued to seek God’s will.
Pray for us when we feel discouraged.
Pray for students who are preparing for examinations.
Pray for those who feel that they are not good enough or that their difficulties are too great.
Obtain for us the grace to trust God more completely.
Teach us to pray with humility, to persevere through difficulties, and to remain faithful to Jesus even when we do not understand His plan for us.
May we never measure our worth according to the standards of the world, but remember that we are beloved children of God.
