Today, September 19, the Catholic Church honors St. Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, a faithful shepherd of Christ who gave his life for the Gospel during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
St. Januarius served as Bishop of Benevento. During the persecution, he courageously visited Christians who had been imprisoned for their faith. He was eventually arrested and imprisoned himself, remaining faithful to Christ despite the threat of death.
St. Januarius teaches us the virtue of courageous faith. His life reminds us that following Christ requires perseverance, especially when our faith is tested. The Church’s liturgy for his memorial calls us to remember those who endured suffering with confidence in God’s promises.
A Prayer to St. Januarius
St. Januarius, faithful bishop and glorious martyr, pray for us.
Ask the Lord to strengthen our faith, give us courage in times of trial, and help us remain faithful to Jesus Christ until the end.
St. Januarius, pray for our families and for all those who are suffering. Obtain for us the grace to trust in God’s providence and to persevere in faith, hope, and charity.
St. Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, pray for us.
Amen.
