Benedictine Abbess and Mystic
Brief Biography:
Saint Mechtildis was born around 1125 into a noble Bavarian family. At the tender age of five, she was placed in the monastery her mother had founded at Edelstetten. From childhood, Mechtildis exhibited a deep love for prayer and an astonishing reverence for the mysteries of God. As she grew, her devotion only deepened: she spent long hours in contemplation, practiced radical humility, and embraced voluntary penances to unite her sufferings with those of Christ.
Eventually, Mechtildis was elected abbess of Edelstetten. Under her guidance, the community flourished in both prayer and charity. Throughout her life, she reported mystical visions—experiencing the presence of the Virgin Mary and hearing heavenly choirs. She was also known to work miracles: the blind received their sight, the mute found their voice, and the sick were healed through her intercession. Despite facing personal trials and the responsibility of leading a monastic community, Mechtildis remained a woman of profound peace and childlike trust in God’s providence. She died in 1160, and her reputation for holiness led many to seek her prayers long after her earthly death.
Short Prayer to Saint Mechtildis of Edelstetten
Heavenly Father,
You granted Saint Mechtildis the grace to live in ceaseless wonder of Your presence.
Through her intercession, help us to cultivate the virtue of awe,
that we might see Your power and mercy in every moment.
Teach us, like Mechtildis, to spend our lives in prayer and service,
trusting always in Your loving plan.
Amen.

Leave us your prayers…
