Saint of the Day: Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions

(June 3, 2025)

Martyrs of Uganda (1886)

On June 3, the Church honors Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions, a group of 22 Ugandan martyrs who gave their lives for Christ in the late 19th century. Charles was a catechist and leader among a group of young Christian converts serving in the court of King Mwanga II of Buganda. When the king began persecuting Christians—especially for their refusal to take part in immoral practices—Charles and the others courageously held firm in their faith.

In 1886, Charles was burned alive for protecting young boys and standing up for Christian values. His companions were executed in horrific ways over a two-year period. Their witness sparked a powerful wave of conversions throughout Africa and continues to inspire Catholics worldwide.

They were canonized in 1964 by Pope Paul VI, who called them a “new dawn of faith” for the African continent.

Prayer:

Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions,
brave witnesses of Christ,
pray for all who suffer for their faith today.
Help us to be strong in our convictions,
pure in heart,
and bold in sharing the Gospel.
Amen.
