Priest and Abbot (c. 1100–1159)
Saint Robert of Newminster was an English priest and Benedictine monk who became one of the early Cistercian reformers in the 12th century. Born near York, he studied at the University of Paris and was ordained a priest. He later joined a group of monks at Fountains Abbey who embraced the strict and prayerful life of the Cistercian order.
In 1138, he was chosen to lead a new foundation at Newminster, where he served as abbot. Known for his humility, wisdom, and holiness, Robert was deeply devoted to prayer, simplicity, and the monastic ideals of silence and labor. He also worked miracles during his lifetime and was sought after for spiritual guidance.
Saint Robert died peacefully on June 7, 1159, and was venerated for his holy life shortly after his death. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage.
