St. Gregory Barbarigo was born in Venice, Italy, in 1625 into a noble family. He was well-educated, deeply spiritual, and devoted to the service of the Church. After serving in diplomatic missions and being ordained a priest, he was appointed bishop of Bergamo and later Cardinal and Bishop of Padua.
As a bishop, Gregory worked tirelessly to reform seminaries, improve clergy education, and care for the poor and sick. Inspired by the teachings of the Council of Trent, he emphasized strong theological training and personal holiness among priests. He also expanded access to learning by founding libraries and promoting schools.
Known for his humility, charity, and deep prayer life, St. Gregory lived simply despite his high rank in the Church. He died on June 18, 1697. He was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1960, who admired his pastoral zeal and scholarly dedication.
