Saint Alban – First Martyr of Britain

Short Biography:
Saint Alban is honored as the first Christian martyr of Britain, believed to have died in the early 4th century during Roman persecution. A pagan by birth, Alban gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing persecution. Moved by the priest’s faith and devotion, Alban converted to Christianity.
When Roman authorities came to arrest the priest, Alban bravely dressed in his clothes and surrendered in his place. He was brought before a judge, who ordered him to renounce the Christian faith. Alban refused, declaring his belief in the one true God. For this, he was sentenced to death and beheaded.
Legend tells that as he was executed, the eyes of his executioner fell out, and a spring of water flowed from the site of his martyrdom. Today, St. Alban’s Cathedral in Hertfordshire, England, stands where his sacrifice is remembered.
