What is St. Junipero Serra known for?
St. Junípero Serra (1713–1784) was a Spanish Franciscan friar whose zeal for the Gospel led him to the New World. After joining the Franciscans in 1730, he felt called to missionary work and, in 1749, set sail for Mexico. In 1769, he founded the first of nine missions along California’s coast, from San Diego to San Francisco, bringing education, agriculture, and the sacraments to Indigenous communities. Despite the hardships of frontier life, Serra learned local languages and customs, baptized thousands, and established enduring faith communities. He trusted always in Divine Providence, famously saying, “We must work as if everything depended on us, but pray as if everything depended on God.” Canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, St. Junípero’s legacy lives on in the vibrant parishes and schools that grew from his missionary foundations.
