Saint of the Day: St. Maurice and His Companions, Martyrs

September 22 is the feast day of St. Maurice and his Companions, Christian soldiers who gave their lives rather than deny Jesus Christ.

St. Maurice was an officer and leader of the Theban Legion, a group of soldiers traditionally associated with Christians from Thebes in Egypt. During the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Maximian, Maurice and his fellow soldiers were ordered to participate in pagan sacrifices. They refused because they would not abandon their faith in the one true God.

St. Maurice Refused to Deny Christ

St. Maurice understood that serving as a soldier did not mean that he could disobey God. When he and his companions were commanded to take part in pagan worship, they remained faithful to Christ.

According to the ancient tradition surrounding their martyrdom, the Christian soldiers were eventually killed at Agaunum, in present-day Switzerland, around the late third century. The ancient account of their martyrdom was written centuries ago, and historians note that some details of the traditional story are uncertain. Nevertheless, the martyrdom of Maurice and several of his companions is an ancient Christian tradition, and devotion to them spread widely throughout Europe.

St. Maurice and his companions teach us that our loyalty to God must come before every earthly power.

They did not abandon their faith when obedience to Christ became costly. They remained faithful even when that faith demanded courage and sacrifice.

A Lesson in Courage and Faith

The example of St. Maurice is especially powerful because he was not a monk or hermit living apart from the world. He was a soldier carrying out his earthly duties while also seeking to remain faithful to God.

His life reminds us that every Christian is called to follow Christ wherever God has placed them.

There may be moments when our faith is tested. We may be pressured to remain silent about our belief in God, to compromise our conscience, or to place worldly approval above the truth.

St. Maurice reminds us to stand firm.

Jesus said:

“Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.”

The martyrs understood that Christ was worth more than earthly security, reputation, or even life itself.

St. Maurice and his companions gave everything to remain faithful to Jesus. Their witness calls us to examine our own hearts.

Are we willing to remain faithful to Christ when it is difficult?

Do we place God above worldly approval?

Do we have the courage to defend our faith with charity and truth?

Let us ask St. Maurice to pray for Christians throughout the world, especially those who suffer because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Let us also pray for soldiers and all those entrusted with protecting others, that God may give them wisdom, courage, and a conscience guided by what is right.

St. Maurice, faithful servant of Jesus Christ,
you remained steadfast when your faith was tested.
You and your companions chose to remain faithful to God
rather than deny the Lord you loved.

Pray for us that we may have the same courage
when our faith is tested.

Help us to place God above worldly approval
and to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Pray for Christians who are persecuted because of their faith.
Strengthen those who are afraid, comfort those who suffer,
and ask Our Lord to protect His Church throughout the world.

St. Maurice and all holy martyrs,
pray for us and lead us closer to Jesus.

Today, ask yourself: What would I be willing to sacrifice in order to remain faithful to Jesus?

We may never face the same persecution that St. Maurice and his companions endured, but every Christian is called to remain faithful to Christ in daily life.

May we have the courage to choose Christ, to live our faith faithfully, and to place our trust in God.
