Saint of the Day: St. Raphael Kalinowski

Priest & Carmelite Reformer (1835–1907)

St. Raphael Kalinowski was born in Poland and became a brilliant military engineer. During the Polish uprising against Russia, he worked to defend his homeland, but after the revolt failed, he was arrested and condemned to ten years of hard labor in Siberia.

Despite harsh conditions, Raphael became known for his deep compassion, spiritual strength, and care for prisoners. After his release, he discerned a religious vocation and entered the Carmelite Order, where he worked tirelessly to restore the order in Poland and Lithuania. He became a beloved spiritual director, known for his humility, kindness, and devotion to prayer.

St. Raphael Kalinowski died in 1907 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1991.
