Why does the Catholic Church have a Pope?

Jesus built His Church on Peter: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church” (Mt 16:18). The Pope is Peter’s successor, ensuring unity and teaching authority (CCC 881-882). It’s Christ’s way of guiding His flock.
